Supply List for Grant Fuller Workshops

This is not a compulsory list. My pallet consists of these pigments, which I have been using for years, and have found to be quite acceptable.

Experienced painters should bring their usual pigments, beginners can start with two pigments, Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna. Cotman is a less expensive "Student Quality" grade made by Winsor Newton. Winsor Newton refers to "Artist Quality".

  • Dioxanine Violet (Cotman)
  • Intense Green (Cotman)
  • Cobalt Blue (Winsor Newton)
  • Ultramarine Blue (Cotman)
  • Intense Blue (Cotman- this colour is also known as Phthalo Blue and Winsor Blue)
  • Raw Sienna (Cotman)
  • Cadmium Yellow (Winsor Newton)
  • Cadmium Orange (Winsor Newton)
  • Cadmium Red Light (Winsor Newton)
  • Permanent Rose (Cotman)
  • Burnt Sienna (Cotman)
  • Raw Umber (Cotman)

Paper

Paper is very important! I use 100% cotton (rag) paper, cold pressed (medium surface texture). Winsor Newton 140 lb., or Arches 140 lb. (stretched) or T.H.Saunders 200 lb.(not stretched. NOTE: for workshops, cut your paper into quarter sheets (11" x 15") or smaller, or use blocks about that size, (9 x 12 is OK). Unless you particularly want to work larger, a quarter sheet will be easier to manage.

Brushes

My main brush is a one inch flat synthetic. I find synthetic brushes are as good as natural hair and a lot less expensive. I also use half and quarter inch flats as well as several sizes of rounds, such as #4, #6, #8, #12. NOTE TO BEGINNERS: it is not necessary to start with a bunch of brushes, a half inch flat and #8 round synthetic watercolour brush will work for quarter sheet paintings.

Sundry Items

HB (no. 2 or office pencils are fine) .07 mechanical pencils are my current preference. Kneaded eraser, paper towels, water container, masking tape, snap off cutter and a pair of pliers. An old tooth brush, sponge and stencil brush can be handy for spatter and texture.
